snow high atop mt. hamilton and snow levels drop to 3500, 4000 feet. right now more of a mix of rain and snow but we did get a dusting for about 15 to 20 minutes. now look at this, your temperatures this morning are chilly. we haven't seen the 30s in four months across the bay area and they're back this morning. look at santa rosa. 3 degrees above freezing here. you're 37 in petaluma and 37 degrees to start in novato. meanwhile san jose is even at 46 degrees. so what you need to know for the rest of the day? we're fair game for these on and off spotty showers. in addition to mountain thunderstorms, we'll break all that down for you and you made it to friday. your weekend forecast coming up in moments. right now we'll send it back to you guys. you know the rain and cold not stopping dozens of families from spending the night outdoors in san jose. they're actually braving the cold weather right now in hopes of feeling a little holiday warmth later this month. christie smith is live outside sacred heart community service center with the story for us this morning. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you.
5:02 am
i can tell you it has been a long, cold, wet night here at sacred heart community center. some of these folks have actually been here since 11:00 yesterday morning. the line stretches around the block. some of them in tents perhaps, hard to say how many people are here but what's happening is that they are distributing holiday food and toy boxes. today is the day that they register people for this. what we're going to do is talk with this woman. you've got five kids you're hoping to get toys for. what will this do for you? >> it's going to help us get them gifts and alleviate us a little bit financially. >> reporter: and you've been here since yesterday at 6:00? >> 6:30. >> reporter: how was this night? it is cold and wet out here?
5:03 am
>> well, we came a little bit prepared. we brought a tent. yeah, it's been pretty cold throughout the night. >> reporter: thanks so much, crystal. i spoke with one of the organizers and he said that the registration starts about 7:30 this morning and goes until 6:00 tonight and then folks come back a little bit closer to the holiday and that's the latest from here. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> some definitely needed holiday help out there. it is 5:03. a sad and painful reminder for a san jose family as they remember the life of a teenager killed in his backyard three years ago. the family of michael russell planning a candlelight vigil on saturday night. russell was sadly stabbed to death back in 2009. two former santa teresa high school students now stand charged. they remain charged with murder but that trial has been delayed over and over. russell's family members say tonight's vigil will renew their call for justice.

it is being held tomorrow night at frost elementary school on comanche and gettysburg drive at 6:30. authorities in mountain view say don't be surprised when they arrest more people in connection with a major unusual drug lab bust that's going on right now in the heart of silicon valley. marla tellez is here this morning with details on what officers found and what will be happening later on today. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. so far five people are in custody and, yes, more arrests are expected as soon as today. now, today we could also learn who these people are. the scientists, if you will, behind this not your run-of-the-mill drug lab. s.w.a.t. officers from several bay area agencies closed in on this mountain view apartment complex thursday to find what mountain view police are calling a dmt drug operation. dmt is a psychedelic drug that triggers intense hallucinations. according to the dea is in the same class of drugs as lsd, but
5:05 am
experts say it is ten times stronger. officers say in two units on the bottom floor they found plants, acid-based solutions, tools and all sorts of equipment to make the drug. they say they have never seen anything like it. >> certainly something we don't want spread. i mean that's for sure. it's -- from what i know this is the first of its kind and we definitely don't want it popping up in other cities, especially ours. >> the owner of this downtown apartment complex that sits on bush street just a few blocks from mountain view's very busy castro street says he had no idea this was happening on his property. but one neighbor tells us she's been suspicious because she often smells a toxic, plastic burning smell coming from that apartment. again, mountain view police say they have five people in custody. more arrests are likely as soon as today. coming up in my next live report, i'll tell you what else

5:09 am
backing up because the exit lanes are so narrow and the off-ramps and on-ramps share the same lanes. that's just a couple of the issues. you add to that the thousands of drivers traveling through here on their way to santana row and valley fair mall, major shopping centers, and you've got a massive traffic headache. it will add new exit ramps and a new flyover ramp that will link 880 with 280. >> we're going to do everything possible to mitigate the impacts that happen during construction, but patience is key. we'll get in, we'll get out and it will be a much better interchange when we're done. >> reporter: vta recognizes that with santana row and valley fair right here traffic will be building up even more during the holiday shopping season. that's why they're holding off on some of the more disruptive parts of the project until after the holidays. the first part of the project generally speaking will be a new entrance into valley fair from 880 and a widening of the stevens creek overpass, which is

but also because it's going to be so cold. >> it's not going to be too bad. if you want to get outdoors, you'll have plenty of opportunity to do so. the sun will be back out for the weekend but then things start to change as we get into next week. we've got a lot more rain on the way, so get ready for that. you'll need that umbrella next week just as you did last night and that morning. look at these showers coming down in the south bay right now. we also have embedded thunderstorms. pea-size hail, very gusty winds. we've already had several reports of just that. the east bay starting to dry out a little bit. taking you to the peninsula, expecting more of these on and off showers throughout the day today. look at this. temperatures have fallen into the 30s. you're now at 35 degrees in santa rosa and that is cold enough for some frost. you're getting a little enclosurclearing up here and so as a result temperatures are dropping like a rock. we're pretty cold in san jose as well with 46 to start. 40 in gilroy.
5:17 am
so let's talk about your forecast for today. area of low pressure comes through. trailing behind this area of low pressure, very cold air will settle into the bay area. we're still fair game for plenty of thunderstorms around the bay area, so we're going to stay here. watch that for you all day long. we are on storm watch in the nbc bay area weather center for today. highs are only going to be in the 50s. you'll need that jacket just about all day long. look at this, things start to change as we get into saturday and sunday. we're expecting widespread frost early sunday morning, even right here in san jose. monday into tuesday the rain arrives. wednesday and thursday, 68 degrees, periods of rain. they're going to be kind of tropical showers as your highs will be nice and comfortable of the systems coming up from the south. sunday is veterans day, a great opportunity to honor all our servicemen and women. >> we're looking over here to the peninsula. christina is talking about the rain passing through in the future but we also have it in

the past. this overlay, anywhere you see the highlighted green roads, that's where it might be a little wetter, maybe some slick conditions for those on and off-ramps. here's 101 moving smoothly past the dumbo and down into palo alto. a little sheen on the roadway, even though we see that, we don't see any problems because the volume is pretty light and folks lowering the speeds just a tad bit. prepare for that this morning. another live look outside shows you coming across that san mateo bridge. westbound the commute picks up a little bit of volume in the commute direction. you can see wet conditions toward the hayward side. a live look at the east shore freeway. coming westbound, your commute direction, lots of spacing between these cars. you're close to the limit all the way from the carquinez bridge to the bay bridge toll plaza. again, possibility of slicker conditions from overnight rains here. in the north bay also the case. we're picking up the volume. anywhere north of san rafael you might also get the patchy fog because of all the moisture in
